Environment and energy efficiency

Conserving natural resources is fundamental for sustainable development and improving the quality of human life. All the ecosystems, the entire food chain, global economy and human health have mutual relationships with multiple components of the environment. Furthermore, these relationships do not recognise any national or continental boundaries. Despite the vital importance of the environment for humanity, environmental degradation and climate change have been threatening the world for many years. As the negative impacts are approaching the point of no return, actions for preserving the environment need to be taken immediately.

Protecting natural resources is not only a concern of the environment and human health but also an economic one. With the global economy aiming to become more circular with the EU paving the way, protecting the scarce natural resources become more important day by day.

Energy efficiency brings numerous environmental benefits. It is a notable factor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, concerning both direct emissions from fossil fuel utilisation in the form of consumption or combustion, and indirect emissions from electricity generation. With the fact that global energy demand is forecast to increase 19% by 2040 with the demand mainly originating from emerging markets and developing economies, energy efficiency is among the key actions. Globally, countries are getting even more engaged in efforts committing to reduce emissions in line with international agreements, making improvements in energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy.

In parallel with the global developments and arising needs, we put environmental protection at the core of everything we do and we adopt a multi-stakeholder and inclusive approach. We aim to help businesses and government decision-makers understand and reduce the negative impact of growth. We guide and assist them in policy-making and capacity building.

We make sure that the stakeholders with whom we work have the information, expertise, skills and support they need to address issues of climate change, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. Similarly, we apply these key principles to our projects, using environmentally friendly methods and tools to deliver environmentally responsible and sustainable outcomes.

Exploring the benefits of increased energy efficiency for Turkish businesses

Conscious of the International Energy Agency’s statement that “energy efficiency is the world’s most important fuel”, we worked with Turkey’s Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) to explore ways in which investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy could pave the way for large energy savings, reduced levels of pollution and increases in energy efficiency that could lead to greater competitiveness for Turkish business in the global market. In a project sponsored by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office we established a special Task Force to conduct a needs analysis and a feasibility study for the establishment of an “Environment and Efficiency Centre” within the TOBB. Our report concluded that such a centre would be feasible and would work in cooperation with the TOBB University of Economics and Technology.
