Introduction

Many countries around the world are working towards zero waste. Zero Waste International Alliance defines the concept of zero waste as “the conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health”.

Zero waste is a goal and a vision to guide people in modifying their lifestyles and practices to foster sustainable life cycles where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use. The zero waste perspective protects the environment and natural resources, provides benefits to communities and supports a strong local economy. It is an ambitious goal. However, individuals have an essential role in preserving natural resources and reducing waste-associated carbon emissions by minimising their waste footprint.

In accordance with the philosophy of zero waste, in our projects, we contribute to awareness-raising in different segments of the society. We adopt inclusive and participatory approaches, and disseminate the knowledge and information through wide-scale events and campaigns. Furthermore, we embrace the zero waste approach in all our actions.

Conducting Awareness Raising Activities and Training/ToT Sessions on “Zero Waste” in Şanlıurfa Haliliye and Kilis Center

The project supported Haliliye and Kilis Municipalities’ adaptation to Zero Waste Regulation and other related standards, norms, legislations of the Turkish environmental legislative framework.

We developed a comprehensive awareness-raising campaign with an inclusive approach to cover the refugees and host communities in the region. The online training sessions within the project scope reached out to a wide range of target groups, including administrative staff of pre-school, primary, secondary and high schools; academic staff of local universities; staff of municipalities, family health centres and public institutions; and key informants, mukhtars and NGO representatives. We also organised training of trainer (ToT) sessions on zero waste were delivered to selected individuals among teachers and administrative staff of schools, local universities’ academic staff and public institutions.
