Our world is estimated to be 4.54 billion years old. Humans have been on earth for approximately 6 million years. For millions of years, our world has gone through countless disasters, wars and crises. Despite all, it has kept sheltering us humans in the best way possible… until now. The world, our shelter, is in big trouble. Unless we act now and right now only, we are going to face the biggest danger in history of causing irreparable damage to our home. Climate change. It’s real, it’s here and it’s going nowhere unless we take serious action against it and change our daily destructive habits once and for all.
HelpZone embarked on its journey to raise awareness of the dangers of the climate change and, to this day, we continue to carry out our mission tirelessly. As we all know, a journey is better taken with a partner than alone, and HelpZone has a great road partner: WEglobal. Ever since the day we were founded, WEglobal volunteers have been by our side with a smile on their faces and a desire to make a change and an impact in their hearts.
In the summer of 2021, several regions across Turkey got stricken by forest fires and floods. HelpZone and WEglobal volunteers took immediate action and brought help to the people in those regions. The main reason for these unfortunate events was, of course, climate change.
In September and October, 2021, HelpZone and WEglobal volunteers joined forces once again and organized a “Climate Change Awareness Raising Activity” on September 18th in Bodrum for local children and their parents. The event became a huge success, and upon requests for another event, the same team organized a second “Climate Change Awareness Raising Activity” on October 23rd at the Umurça Park in Bodrum for a greater number of children and parents. The target number was 250 children. Approximately 370 children showed up at the event. The event received great attention from the locals.
Our collaboration continued in Ankara. WEglobal volunteers and HelpZone organized an activity on September 25th, at the Eymir Lake in Ankara; within the scope of the European Mobility Week 2021. We welcomed 30 visually-impaired individuals and their chaperons at the entrance of the lake, rode tandem bicycles, had lunch by the lake, and had a discussion session regarding the difficulties visually-impaired individuals are facing daily where we exchanged ideas for solution.
HelpZone will continue to organize events and training activities to raise awareness on climate change, while supporting disadvantaged individuals and groups along the way, and we know that WEglobal will continue to be our biggest supporter on our journey.
As the old adage goes, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”
