Oral vaccination of foxes and other wild carnivores in Serbia against rabies

WEglobal is leading a project called ’SERBIA VET’ to improve the planning, legislative and institutional capacity of Serbia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection as part of the country’s preparations for EU membership.

To this end, the Veterinary Directorate (MAFWM), with support from the EU Delegation to Serbia, carried out an aerial campaign in the autumn of 2019 under the project ‘Capacity building for the alignment with the acquis in the areas of agriculture, rural development, food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy’, targeting the vaccination of foxes and other wild carnivores against rabies.

Vaccine baits were distributed by fixed-wing aircraft along parallel flight paths 500m apart to optimise and homogenise aerial distribution. A geographical information system was used to provide objective evaluation of bait distribution and the planes also carried video camera survey systems. A total of 1,671,000 baits/doses were distributed, covering a designated area of 75,210 km². The campaign ran through to 11 January 2020.
